Personality traits are what define individuals. No two people can have the same matrix of character traits. Understanding how they differ from one person to the next will give you an idea of how multiple personality shades make us who we are.
We’ve heard this line many times from friends, family and others, “Oh that’s just the way he/she is. It’s in his/her personality to behave that way.” We use the term ‘personality’ so loosely that we have forgotten to analyze what it truly means. Different permutations and combinations of these personality traits lead to character building and personality development of an individual. Knowledge of these personality traits can help one in bringing him-/herself to a point of self-improvement. We are the kind of people we portray ourselves to be.
Wouldn’t the world be absolutely dull and ridiculously boring if we all were of the same personality type? I think so! It is the differences between individuals that create a multifaceted society. For example, if A and B are best friends and carry the exact traits that the other has, they would both be in a constant state of competing with each other.
It gives us all a sense of individuality, separating one from those who do not possess the same traits that would solely define you. In fact, several people prefer to undergo personality tests to know and understand themselves better. A lot of us don’t know who we truly are or what we’re capable of, taking a test or going through one-on-one group sessions, would help immensely.

Five Dimensions of a Personality
There are five attributes or traits that define a personality type. After research was carried out in the field of psychology, the five attributes were called the Big Five Factors (or Five Factor Model), because, they stood for the basic structure behind all personality types.
Openness
These individuals are open to creativity, new ideas, and thoughts. They appreciate art, are rational thinkers, intelligent, a little complex by nature and are mindful of their own feelings.
Extraversion
Individuals under this trait are aggressive, chatty, outgoing, and look for the company of stimulating people. They have lots of positive energy in them and like to gain the attention of people. They believe in action.
Neuroticism
This trait includes individuals harboring negative emotions in them. Individuals may be prone to anxiety, depression, or may get easily stressed. They are quick-tempered and may overreact in response to certain situations.
Conscientious
These individuals are well-organized and systematic with regard to their work, and aim high in all that want to accomplish. Self-discipline comes naturally to them; they are passionate about their work and are highly efficient.
Agreeableness
Rather than being suspicious or curious, these individuals sympathize with others. They are kind, warmhearted, understanding, cooperative, and friendly. They give their best in any relation. They are open to compromising, helpful to others and are optimists.
There are traits that society expects us to stand by, for it is those traits that hold communities and family together. These traits are extrinsic and not intrinsic. However, they do make a difference.
Impact of Society on Character Traits
A loving and affectionate family life is very important to help maintain bonds. The complete opposite of this would be a family that was indifferent and hostile to one another.
A high intellectual ability in family members is a very positive addition to one’s personality. The opposite of this is poor intellect and ability in the family.
A person’s personality traits are highly affected if the parents or relatives in a family offer a sense of direction to their children. On the other hand, if the family does not give direction, it can have a totally opposite impact.
Good physical attributes that are inherited from parents and ancestors, add highly to the growth of one’s personality traits. The same stands true for poor physical attributes that are inherited.
Good psychological health and well-being is highly responsible for personality development. Bad psychological health will have a negative effect on one’s personality.
If society is supportive of an individual, that is also taken as a positive personality trait and the opposite stands true for one who does not get enough support from the society.
The impact of the constituents of this list may have different effects on different individuals. These traits in combination with their attitude-centric personality traits, frame the overall impact.
Each individual is different and owns a different recipe of character traits. As such, it would be very difficult to conclude about a certain personality trait and the interpretation of its impact. The point is, that certain personality traits can be acquired to encourage self-improvement. At the same time, if one needs to rid oneself of a certain trait, they can do that as well. This can help you make yourself the best version of what you can be.
